Football Marathons

Put your love of football to the ultimate test this summer by entering one of our Football Marathons – TackleAfrica’s unique fundraising event. Each year over 500 people take part in our regional 12-hour tournaments. Our flagship marathon is in London but we also hold regional marathons in Brighton, Jersey and Oxford raising over £200,000 to support our work.

Play Football

Each Football Marathon typically runs from 8am to 8pm. It’s a challenging physical feat for even the fittest of footballers, but the friendly atmosphere and camaraderie brings teams and players of all abilities back every year.

During the course of each Football Marathon, the average player can expect to run over 40km – about the same as the London Marathon. Squads of maximum eight (no more under any circumstances!) play 6-a-side for 12 hours in a fundraising super-tournament with group stages, knockouts and playoffs. To be fair to all, the team that is signed in at 8am is the team you must play with throughout the day.

Raise Money

Each team commits to raise a fundraising target (between £1360 and £1760 per team depending on the location – that’s just £170-£220 per player). Put simply, if you find 8-10 people that will sponsor you £20 for an amazing cause, you’ve reached your target.

There are seeding points for teams that exceed their fundraising targets and we provide all the information, guidance and support you need to get there.

Change Lives

The money you and your team raise will improve countless young lives across sub-Saharan Africa where ignorance and myths about HIV, and lack of access to information and services for sexual health result in over a million preventable deaths every year.

The Football Marathons unite fans of the beautiful game through our shared love of football. Here in the UK we use it to raise cash, and in Africa we put that money into our sexual health through football programmes.

The potential of the model is mind-blowing… The act of taking one cohort of 20 coaches through the whole programme therefore has the potential to give thousands of young people access to HIV and AIDS education in their community.
